Real Steel / Re: Dual-Role Battle-Sight Options; Elcan Alternative?
« on: January 03, 2016, 11:23:45 PM »
Have you looked into 1-4 or 1-6x  scopes in the short dot form factor? I don't have any experience with the high end ones but they seem to be really growing in popularity. Nightforce, leupold cqbss, sfwa, vortex viper/razor, S&B, and trijicon accupoint are all popular and highly regarded, some more so than others. Several of those have been awarded military contracts, so I think battle sight would be an appropriate term.

IIRC concensus from socom guys on the elcan is that it is bulky, heavy and FOV isn't all that great but seeing as it is often the only magnified option available it is relatively popular. I know I won't even be considering an elcan once I build an AR.

Accessories & Ammo / Re: Comms questions
« on: January 02, 2016, 11:34:28 AM »
The baofengs are pretty good radios. I have a couple of them myself. Speaker mics work well in ~90% of situations but if you need to go stealthy then you may want something else but imo in those situations it is usually sufficient to just turn down your volume as long as your radio is within reach. A lot of the speaker mics have a port for an earpiece if that is what you are looking for. Be warned though, the baofengs speaker mics are super flimsy. Recently I've seen two of them show up DOA. Me and my friends have several others that have been fine though. If you intend for the mic to be a permanent setup then you might want to get a higher end one from Kenwood or something.

As for headsets there are an infinite number of options including real military headsets as well as knockoff versions. Apparently the clones by TRI are actually pretty decent but I've stuck with real peltors after a crappy set of ztactical comtacs years ago. Over the ear headsets are great if you are going for a realistic look but imo aren't really the ideal setup since they limit your situational awareness to a certain extent.

Airsoft Discussion / Re: South east action?

Well the only games I've played at recently have been semi-only, so generally HPA guns are much more prone to being abused in that situation since it takes a ton more work to get an AEG to the same level of trigger response. I think that a strict limit on the number of mags a player can carry would help to prevent some of this. I know hi cap bans are becoming more popular, but it doesn't really place a limit on the amount of ammo players can carry, it only changes the way that ammo is distributed between mags. I know Milsim West actually issues the ammo to players to limit how much people can carry. I'd be open to this idea as well, but I've never actually tried it myself.

Obviously you can't count on everyone to follow the rule but hopefully additional limits would help to some extent.

I've noticed the same thing repeatedly but so far it hasn't gotten to the point ruining the gameplay for me. Many will probably disagree but I'd fully support a ban on hpa guns or at least stricter mag limits. It's a bummer that hpa spam is such an issue but I think it is just that the performance is just too accessible to the wrong group in a way that it is not with AEGs. Limiting everything other than lmgs to semi auto definitely helps but I think that a mag limit would also help as well.

Sweet kit Knife! Are you working on an MK48 conversion? With the conversion kits that have been popping up I've been considering one myself if I can find a boneyard Mk46 for cheap enough to use as a base.

This is a great topic, it seems like I am always working on something airsoft related no matter how squared away I think my kit is. Here's what I have going at the moment.

TM Glock 17 w/ Guarder frame and slide/barrel kit - I got this thing used and non-functioning over a year ago and hadn't gotten around to really diagnosing its issues until recently. The guarder frame is much nicer than the TM but the amount of slop in the slide and barrel kit are pretty disappointing. Anyway it looks like the hammer isn't striking far enough into the valve on the magazine to get the gun to cycle fully. Judging by some pictures it looks like aftermarket valve knockers reach out farther to push the valve in more, so I need to order some parts and give it a try.

Comms - right now my working setup is just dual Baofeng UV5Rs with speaker mics but I have 2 pairs of peltor comtacs and another on the way, plus a bunch of PTTs. My u283->kenwood adapters keep breaking which is keeping me from running the comtacs so I need to figure out a more sturdy solution. Maybe I'll post a pic later but I have WAY too much comms gear right now and need to sell off a bunch of it once I get a setup that works reliably.

I also just finally got a couple Thunder B's. I opted for the tripwire shells since the other ones take way too long to go off. The tripwire shells still take several seconds but I'm looking for about 3-4 seconds tops so I'll try some of the popular mods. I'm very happy with these so far and I'll probably pick up at least one more.

My VFC 416 has been going strong for a couple years now after I overhauled it but I still need to get around to doing an R hop. Maybe in the spring. My backup which is a combat machine based MK18 is also running fine but IMO needs a quicker motor. Right now it has a frankentorque and SHS 12:1s and the trigger response is too slow for my liking. I'll probably play around with some extra armatures and see if I can improve this just with some spare parts.

Overall I'm pretty happy with my current setup but there are always things to improve on. My main goal is just to get out and play more often though.

Tech Questions / Re: Stinger's Teching Guides
« on: December 14, 2015, 08:13:04 PM »
Good motor overview, this covers all of the basic important info that the average user needs to know. I also think that it is worth mentioning that slower high torque motors can be compensated for by using a low ratio gearset. This can result in equivalent rate of fire but more efficient operation and less heat buildup in the motor. If a motor is the only upgrade that you plan on doing then a 16TPA Neo motor from SHS or one of the many other companies that they are sold under these days is probably one of the best all around choices, but if you are willing to upgrade the gearset to a lower ratio such as a 13:1 or 12:1 from SHS then a higher TPA such as the 22TPA JG Blue or ZCI torque are great options. I currently have a frankentorque in both of my primaries right now, one of which has a Riot 10:1 setup and the other is an shs 12:1. The 10:1 setup is incredible and when combined with a BTC spectre using precocking the trigger response is as good as just about anything out there. However, I find that the 12:1 setup actually has worse trigger response than a ZCI 22TPA on SHS 13:1s in my friend's SR25. I plan to switch to a 22TPA arm soon to make up for it. All of these comparisons were done on equivalent 11.1V lipos.

It's a shame but with the popularity of HPA guns this information will probably be irrelevant to a lot of people. Maybe people will get over it eventually or a superior system will come out but I just cannot handle external air rigs and I think drop in HPA setups provide way too easy of a way to achieve high performance that often tends to lead to superiority complexes and poor sportsmanship on the field.

Anyone have experience with PT recently? I thought they had closed but I guess not. Most of their reviews seem positive but there are a few complaints as well.

I'm interested in getting more info on this as well. I'd love to play some cqb but have no interest in playing at eastside where the fps limit is 400. I'd be happy with anything at this point really. I've been itching to play since the last game the Bastards put on.

Airsoft Discussion / Re: Elite force 1911 thoughts?
« on: November 25, 2015, 10:18:57 PM »
I'm no expert on gas guns and I know almost nothing about elite force  (but iirc they just rebrand everything) but one thing I always look for is parts compatibility. One thing I've learned is that pretty much all airsoft guns are crap in one way or and you will inevitably have to fix this or plan on replacing it altogether. Generally fixing it is the better option if you are patient enough to do the research and work yourself. With that being said, buying a gun with proprietary parts really limits your options for repair and upgrades. I see no reason to go from a TM compatible platform to one that isn't. If your 226 is only firing 10 shots in warm weather than something is clearly wrong. If it's doing a full mag in warm weather but only 10 shots in cold weather then it might just be a temperature issue.

After Action Reports / Re: Michigan vs. Ohio 11/07/2015

Footage looks good as well ajax. I personally have one suggestion, and it goes for both your video and stingers, but I prefer longer clips that show more context rather than just a "highlight reel." Others may diagree but especially for games that I was at I enjoy seeing things from another player's point of view but it's hard to do when the video is just short clips overlayed with music. IMO it's totally okay to show yourself getting hit, etc since it's everything that happens in between that really helps put things in context.

Mosin made it seem like Ohio was coming at us with much more organized planning and structure, so I put a significant effort into having a communications network and somewhat of a plan.

Well big props to you for making it happen! I could tell just from your video that you guys had a lot more structured command. Ideally every game would be planned like that. We didn't even have a designated CO for our team so trying to relay information and get squads moving in any kind of coordinated effort was a headache since a bunch of people didn't even have radios. In the last half comms pretty much fell apart completely so my squad did our best to keep the admins in view/earshot to stay updated and just grab whatever other guys were hanging around at the moment to complete objectives.

Nice footage, it would have been nice to play on the MIA side, looks like you guys were much better organized. We seriously wouldn't have even had a common channel on the between squads on the Ohio team if I hadn't gotten everyone's attention at the beginning when everyone was just standing around shooting their guns into the woods. Even so half the time people were either hot mic'ing on our command channel or using it for squad communications so it was hard to figure out what was going on. I had a good time regardless, but having comms and leadership figured out really helps.

Good footage from when you guys took the castle from us. I wish my pistol had been working and maybe I would have given you a run for your money. It was a bummer to sit there helpless because of my med limit.

Bump. Last call before this goes up for sale on other forums.

Airsoft Discussion / Re: GBB Glock blowback nozzle sticking.
« on: November 09, 2015, 03:06:01 PM »
It's hard to know without seeing it in person, but GBBs are pretty simple so it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out where the issue is. You don't want to have so much oil in there that it is contaminating your hop up, but it definitely shouldn't be dry. Make sure your piston and nozzle are lubricated enough that the nozzle can easily slide over the piston o ring. You should also have a spring about 2 inches long that pushes the nozzle forward that sits in the top part of the blowback housing so make sure you have that. If you are unsure about how anything goes back together check out KnucklesGSM on youtube, he has a bunch of good videos on the TM design glocks that should help you get everything together properly.
