Tech Questions / Re: DIY cycle completion mosfet?

Let us know how it goes. I'm also interested in trying this out, but I won't be able to until the summer.

I have been thinking about something like this a lot recently too. Here's a suuuuper rough ms paint schematic:

This is basically T6's idea I think. The red squares are switches; switch 1 is the trigger and switch 2 is the cutoff lever. Switch 2 is closed by default, and switch 1 closes when the trigger is pulled. When the cutoff lever is activated, switch 2 opens the circuit so the motor temporarily stops. The trick is, when the cutoff lever comes back, you don't want the circuit to close again.

Kjones, is there some kind of gate that will only become true once switch 1 is opened and closed again? If so, that should allow semi-auto to work.

Quick edit for detail:
I've done a bit of looking online for components (disclaimer: I have basically no experience with electronics) and I found some micro push buttons that could work since they're the right size. However, they can only handle around .2 amps, which is bad. Luckily, with a mosfet the switches shouldn't be getting a lot of current, right? Most of it goes through the fet I think, but actual quantities are important here. Also, I don't know how mechanically reliable those microswitches are (the Ares microswitch trigger was notoriously unreliable if I remember right).

Double edit because I read more of the thread:
I don't think an arduino would be good for a final version because they are a bit too big to fit in a gearbox, but maybe you could design a PCB that fits? The arduino would be great for prototyping the software though. Obviously a fully Computerized integrated fet is possible (spectre) but that kind of takes the cheap and simple part out of the whole concept. In my opinion, a combination of simple electrical switches and the existing mechanical parts would be ideal. That way you improve the normal AEG trigger, but you don't have to worry about sector gear sensors and microprocessors.

Clothing & Load Bearing Gear / Re: Flyye Streamline

Huh, I've never heard of that PC. Maybe the Flyye FAPC cummerbund will work, or their swift (JPC) 3 band skeletal.

Don't the inserts kind of defeat the purpose of the bfg mag pouches?

What hydro pouch do have on the back? I need something that compact.

I'm not too familiar with the model you guys have, but 1000 ft. sounds pretty short in terms of range. I met a drone hobbyist last summer who could send his out for miles theoretically. The battery life on the quadcopter wasn't the greatest, but he showed me some videos from his RC plane that could just go on and on, miles out. They both had backup autoilots (and fully autonomous modes). I know the builds weren't even that expensive (relatively). They were mostly cookie-cutter kits on Hobbyking that he put together from instructions on forums. I think it was around $300 for everything minus the camera.

The footage you guys are getting is still really cool though. Even 1000 ft. range can be very useful at the village at Hell's Survivors or at most of the fields at No Limits.

I've thought about airsoft drone usage quite a bit, ever since I saw a related thread on airsoftmechanics a while ago. I fully support the use of drones, whether they're normal planes or quadcopters. However, ff they can't shoot at infantry, players shouldn't be able to shoot at the aircraft IMO. Maybe just have a capturable SAM site as an area denial for the drone, if it actually has strategic significance. Either that, or you just have to hide in the woods where the drone can't see you. Honestly, I don't think a drone should ever be shot at, because if you do take it down, you have just created the biggest possible aircraft-related safety hazard (having it falling onto somebody).

When you get down to the technical aspect, I think a long-endurance plane would be much more practical than a quadcopter, for the simple reason of operating time. There's a reason that Predator drones are fixed wing aircraft rather than x-copters. Of course, any sort of aerial recon has the potential to be super cool and add a lot to a milsim experience.

As a side note, the airsoftmechanics thread I referred to was actually talking about airsoft air support, in which the aircraft would actually be armed. Now this throws a whole bunch of new aspects to discuss, but I think figuring out the gameplay mechanics of a simple recon drone would be a good start.

Nice score! I'm still working on the SCAR-L I picked up from you.

SCAR-Ls seem to get around a lot. I finished* one of the ones I got from you, but got rid of the other 2.

*technically it works...but still needs work

Tech Questions / Re: Trigger locking up every 8th pull or so...

Did you buy it used or new? It could just be a wire blocking the trigger or something.

I don't work on other people's guns, but I have bought a few used that had some weird things. I got an "upgraded" AK a while ago from a guy on AS, and it was all sorts of messed up. He said I had to use a lipo in it because "it takes a lot of power." Plugged in a 11.1, and it locked up mid cycle. Tore it down to find a balanced motor pulling SHS 18:1's with an M130, while the sector gear was short stroked (but the piston wasn't for some reason). It was horribly shimmed (looked like he didn't change the stock Lancer Tactical shim job) and the piston head was gratuitously wrapped in teflon tape (terrible airseal anyways). The icing on the cake was the gearbox grease, which left an interesting pattern on the spur gear:

I posted it on ASM and someone thought it was a SystemA helical gear  ;D.

I'm just going to agree with T6 about the lipos. There isn't really much more to say; they're great. Hobbyking is a great place to get them.

I haven't used a fuse on any AEG since my first one. So far I've had good luck with the Jonezy fet, the Gate Pico SSR, and of course the Nukefet.

There's a lot of teching info on AS, and of course ASM. Once again, I agree with T6 about brill and clandestine. Great places to buy parts.

Krylon and Rustoleum both have a camo series of spray paints that are perfect for airsoft.

Bare minimum:
Gun
Full seal goggles

Next:
BDU set (camo uniform)
load bearing gear and mags

Things you don't need starting out:
pistol
tricked out gun accessories
super elite helmet setup
you get the idea

Airsoft Discussion / Re: MiA Round Table #1: Facebook versus Forums
« on: September 08, 2015, 11:47:11 PM »
^ I think I was just reading a similar post by you on ASF. I personally don't do anything airsoft related on FB, and I'm definitely in the "pro forum" camp (that doesn't mean I'm anti Facebook though— it's a different communication platform with a different purpose for me). I don't go on the forums much anymore; MiA has always been my home forum and it just isn't very active usually. Once I got an account on ASF, I was a little overwhelmed because it's such a big forum relative to ours (it has a great commerce section though). I don't spend enough time posting to really make a name for myself, but I still think the forums are a better community. Airsoftmechanics is also a good one, although it can be intimidating to post there as a new member.

As a side note, I think the Round Table is a great idea, because it will help keep actual forum discussion alive. The majority of posts nowadays seem to be in commerce and event related threads.

I'm there as a freshman currently. I know there's a paintball club, so I'm going to ask those guys first, but other than that you'd just have to find individuals who are in the sport. I'm going to the rec sports expo on Sunday so I'll see if I can find any airsoft related groups (though I doubt I'll find any). I could start one I suppose, but schools aren't typically too hot on the idea of a club involving realistic replica firearms.
