Accessories & Ammo / Short zoom level scopes or short dots

So I've used red dots for years, I've used scopes for years. But now the cool kids seem to be using short dots and other low magnification stuff which you can then twist and get say 4x. So I'm curious what you guys using them are thinking of them in practice.

I just started testing a Bushnell 1.5-4x scope on my own sort of DMR M4 and I'm not sure what I think of it yet. But I haven't had it long enough. I'm not sure I like 1.5x vs. Iron Sights or a 1x red dot. I don't like when shooting both eyes open that the scope occludes more of my vision compared to a red dot or it seems to.

This all might be things I'll get used to, but I'm curious what you guys think of it. Is it a fad, or is it the best thing ever or something in between.

EDIT: I should mention I was planning on putting that Bushnell on my real AR but like allot of things I like to test them with airsoft first and see how I like them moving/shooting etc. Gives me a chance to shake things out before I change something on a platform that slings lead rather than plastic. And I'm not a super secret squirrel or anything my AR is home defense and plinking critters around here. But I still like to insure I'm not changing something before testing it fairly well first and making sure it works for me.

Scenario:

As winter approaches, more than just leaves are falling on the Korean peninsula. As nuclear tensions mount between North Korea and the United states and its allies, displays of military power have become commonplace. The US and South Korea are flying numerous bombers and fighters over Pyongyang in ever-increasing frequency while North Korea positions its forces closer and closer to the DMZ. North Korea, growing weary of an impending air attack, secretly plans to shoot down an American bomber in a reckless display of aggression.

North Korea’s plan in downing a US Air Force B-52 proves to be successful, but the plane was coincidentally carrying an unexpected piece of cargo: a high-yield nuclear device. Many times more powerful than anything the secluded country could produce with antiquated Soviet-era technology, the device could completely wipe Seol off the map. The bomber was never supposed to be carrying anything other than conventional ordnance, resulting in the US and South Korean forces being slow to realize the gravity of the situation. By the time the news has spread through military channels, North Korea has already mobilized in an effort to capture whatever the plane was carrying. To make matters worse, the plane went down inside North Korea.

The North Korean Military doesn’t know exactly what was aboard the bomber they shot down. The bomber crashed in an extremely rural area of their homeland, one inaccessible by major roads and too thick with vegetation to safely land an aircraft. So their solution to recover the weapon as well as any technology they can salvage is to mount an expedition to the crash site. Once they secure the weapon, site, and technology they will have to extract with everything to a waiting plane on the tarmac.

The US(CIA) and South Korean underground forces need to infiltrate that location and destroy the crash site with a purpose built bomb before it falls into the wrong hands. Once the target is destroyed their cover is blown as a result they need to get back across the border into friendly territory with any intelligence they can recover during the operation.

Rules of Engagement/FPS Limits:

FPS with .2g projectile(calculated based on Joules of energy with the BB weight used) 001-350fps 5ft. CQB/Assault role, full auto permitted.

FPS Table:
351-400fps 40ft. Assault role, full auto permitted.
401-450fps 60ft. DMR role, full auto permitted but limited.*
450-550fps 100ft. Semi auto or bolt action only.**

Joules Table:
0.01-1.14 5ft. CQB/Assault role, full auto permitted.
1.15-1.49 40ft. Assault role, full auto permitted.
1.50-1.88 60ft. DMR role, full auto permitted but limited.*
1.89-2.81 100ft. Semi auto or bolt action only.**

*DMR Role full auto is permitted, but short bursts only max of 4-5BB’s per burst.
**Sniper class rifles do not require full auto lock out, however if caught using full auto in game you will be asked to leave and not return. Airsoft is a game based on trust, and I trust this won't be an issue.

Food etc: Food will be available on site, planned Chilli, I do need a headcount on how many guys would like lunch there will be other things to go with it. But it will be $5 a head for lunch, those who aren't familiar with this area, it's remote. As such you will need to either bring lunch, or buy lunch here. There is no place close by to eat especially under the time frame we're going to shoot for with lunch.

Water is available from the house, we will have cups etc but it's always recommended to bring a bottle, or camelback to make sure you're hydrated even in cooler weather.

Approx. timetable:
1000-1100 CST - Chrono and setup for game, loading mags etc.

1100 CST - Scenario 1: Recovery

1400 CST - Break for lunch(this may vary, it's based on the primary objective, also since this is a late lunch you should probably eat breakfast before coming)

1430-1500 - Scenario 2: Extraction

1700 - This is also up in the air, depends on how long scenario 2 takes to complete, if it ends quickly and guys are willing we may do some basic pickup games afterwards. But typically that's not the case.

Local and regional events / UP Airsoft Events

So events in this section occur within the UP. If you're not familiar with the area and airsoft scene be aware it's quite a bit smaller than what you're accustomed to in lower Michigan. Most of the fields are privately owned, and are not "for profit" type of businesses. As such the events are typically smaller(though MTU's games do sometimes draw quite a few guys in the 50+ player range).

Generally though games posted in this section as of writing this are fairly small 15-30 player games. It's unlikely that it's worth guys traveling up to our games unless you happen to be in the area and would like to play. Or are planning a trip and would like to stop by. Either way you're more than welcome to contact the host and get more information or around what the current player count is etc. But if you're planning to travel please contact the host before to insure it's worth the trip.

I'm not knocking our games here at all, but I want realistic expectations for those who might be interested in attending. Typically it's all local players that are traveling between 30-200 miles for these types of games. Overall though it's a far smaller community of players though some of us with allot of long term experience as well.

Also since I organize UP Airsoft's Facebook group which is where most of the individual fields and teams are organized, if you've got a particular question about a game, field, or the state of the community in the UP. Feel free to contact me here or where ever I'm pretty easy to get ahold of and happy to help whenever I can.

Forum News / Image upload changes.

So I've opened up some storage for images on the site. We always ran that quite limited but I've opened it to around 2mb per image that can be directly attached to a post. You also can attach images via Tapatalk when doing it that way it actually uploads the image to their servers instead.

So I'd recommend trying to use this rather than the "Add image to post" link that hosts them off site for a little while more of a trial. And we'll see how it effects the site and hosting. But I think it's going to be just fine and should make it a little easier to post photos.

Additionally, you'll see more of these posts. Prior to our conversations on Facebook and here I had already been planning to roll out a bunch of new stuff for the site. Just was waiting on time to do it, so I'll be changing some things. Making mobile browsing a little easier and generally trying to improve the user experience. If someone out there reading this has experience with SMF(Simple Machines Forums) and would like to make suggestions for plugins etc that they would like to see feel free to shoot me a note. If you don't have experience there you're still always welcome to make suggestions it just may not be possible to implement within the framework.

Forum News / Social login

So guys I enabled a function tonight where you can tie your MIA account to your google or facebook account. Allowing you to login with either one directly to your MIA account. So if you're on your phone logged into facebook or google you can click login in the browser and use those credentials to login. You can also register accounts that way as well.

If you've already got an account you can go to your profile and add them to your existing account as another way to login. Basically it's using those sites for authentication. Very much the same as allot of places are using these days, but it gives you another easy option to register and use the site without keeping another password.

Keep me posted if you run into any issues at all with it.

Off Topic / What do you do for a living?

So I'm curious what the occupations are here, I know some younger guys are likely in school or college but just for fun I'm curious to hear what guys who work do for a living.

Myself I'm a full time holster maker, started building rigs out in 2009 for myself. Then shortly afterwards had a bunch of guys that liked my work, and it turned in the business that supports myself and my wife and kids. I'll never get rich doing it, but I really do enjoy making holsters. Working with leather I start with basically the raw materials and at the end of the day I have a finished product. For me it sort of reminds me of when I did construction. I always liked framing since you saw progress in your work and built something. So to some degree that's what I do now, just in allot weirder and fancier way;)

For guys curious to see more pictures etc of what I do just go to my site and click through some of the rigs there are pictures of just about everything from exotic leather like shark, elephant etc down to plain jane holsters too. www.adamsholsters.com

And I'm not advertising, of course if guys want a holster I'll happily build it. But it's sort of hard to explain my job without pictures, and I don't want to stack a ton of them in this thread. So if it sparks your interest to see more feel free if not feel free not to click on it either;)

Airsoft Discussion / State of the community and ideas to improve MIA going forward.

So guys there was an ongoing discussion on the Facebook group surrounding ways to improve MIA. Unfortunately it was brought to light because of a particularly irritating example of poor airsoft behavior at a recent event. I'll quote my post there to explain some of my feelings.

So I'm going to throw out my 2 cents, most of you don't know me or well. Some of you do and even a few may remember me from way back in the early days on MIA. Some of you first got to meet me face to face last year when I was downstate since I'm in the UP I'm always a bit off the normal, though in the past as Mike mentioned young and disposable income I fairly often jumped in my car drove 500 miles and played the weekend games, then drove home to work. I played with Hado and the guys from ACO and allot of those old timers that are even more old timers than those of us now considered the old timers;)

What I personally see different or the largest difference, is that Facebook as a whole is casual communication. Most of the traffic has moved here from the forums, it started before the transition to the new site though. The site didn't help in the sense that it was different, but the reason was because we couldn't sell guns anymore on proboards and we didn't own the history of MIA all the posts etc. It's stuck on proboards. As it stands the community owns the content on MIA, it could easily be moved to a different platform or host without much issues which we could never do back in the day. But guys started going to facebook when you could sell guns here, which dropped MIA's numbers allot, as it tapered off, we made the move, then facebook banned gun sales, and some traffic came back.

None the less the casual nature and lack of formatting and archival of information I see as the biggest issue. On the forums you can see to a degree what someone contributed based on their post count, their rank and how long they have been a member. There isn't anything like that here to take it's place. Also older information is still available and able to be easily searched and found. Which cuts down on the constant repeat posts(it still occurs but less).

I'm also not saying facebook is bad, it isn't, but I think it's a big part of the problem with MIA as a community. It's driving a casual conversation about airsoft which isn't bad, but when the habbits from facebook end up at events it really shouldn't be a surprise. MIA in the past because of the platform and rules tended to shake those people out. Was it perfect? No not even close, there was drama and BS etc. But the mods/admins did their best to keep it going forward in the right direction. The same thing occurs here but because of the platform it's a hell of allot harder to track users and admin this. Just a minor example warning levels. Here it's a ban or nothing, no tracking etc. On the forum you can put notes on a person, so the other mods know the history and if they have been a repeat problem ban them the next time they do something purely stupid.

It's not a perfect solution, but I do feel the forums give the community more structure and continuity as well as control over the quality of the users/players than we'll ever see on facebook.

As far as the types of games, we've got 2,000 players on here even if a quarter were active then we could have full rosters at any type of event the hosts would like to host across lower Michigan every single weekend. But we've gotta get the new players involved in the community, and make it accessible but also a serious enough environment that they will take it serious. And no I don't mean serious in a bad way, but take safety seriously and respect other players etc. Maybe I'm just old, but that's the only real way I see the community going forward long term, I could certainly be wrong but it's also the reason I spearheaded getting the new forum setup, adding up everyone's old post counts etc and moving them and generally spending the time and money getting it all setup and running. I'd like to see the community thrive, and ideally at some point I'd like to be able to attend some of the larger games like I used to downstate again. Though my life will have to be a bit less busy before that is an option anytime soon.

Either way my 2 cents, short version use the forum, it doesn't take that many guys to drive the traffic and information back that direction. If you feel that's the problem then you can do something about it just simply by posting there and replying to questions etc.

For those that suggested moving the discussion here, let's do it. On top of that if it's news to you reading this, I'd love to hear your opinion as well on what we can do as a community to make it stronger and better as a whole.

EDIT: Note I'm a very small part of the overall conversation on facebook, so please don't think I'm trying to "control" it by any means. I just wanted to quote my own post there, so that guys have an idea of some of the things being discussed, and get their own ideas out there.

Also the broad strokes are the community as a whole is more fragmented and poor behavior and organization is causing some issues within the community. My theory as mentioned above is that forums are a better organization system for many reasons for our type of community. Also Facebook while it does some things very well, I think is contributing to the current issues. Myself I see facebook a bit more like a "chat" than a forum replacement, but I think everyone is open to suggestions here for ways to move forward and help the community.

Forum News / Encryption

So I enabled encryption across the site, for logins etc. So you should notice a little lock in the corner indicating that it's running when logging in and whatnot. You may also notice it shows "https://miairsoft.org" rather than "http://miairsoft.org". This just shows that it's working. If anyone notices problems with anything not working or issues from this change please feel free to shoot me a PM happy to take a look and get it fixed.

EDIT: Some may have noticed as well it was up and down for a few minutes while I pushed all the chat stuff through SSL as well. It should be all up and running now without issues. If you have any issues make sure to refresh the site and make sure you've got a current version before reporting. Since it could just be cached pages. Accessories & Ammo / DIY Fan goggles

So I meant to post this a while back and never got around to it. But I've been using it with what little I've had time to play and they have been working very very well. None the less backstory is that I can fog just about anything. Thermal lens etc, virtually I haven't found a goggle or glass that I can't fog in the process of playing airsoft. Been an issue from the start to varying degrees, sometimes I can get a while without issues then it crops up. Either way I got tired of band aid style fixes and decided to just build a solution. Biggest problem with most of the fan goggles is bulk, they try to slap a fan on the goggle itself rather than "piping" the air to the goggle. Some of the systems I've seen that followed that design idea were just more expensive than I wanted to pay or weren't as flexible as I wanted.

So I found a small squirrel cage style fan used for some sort of electronics on ebay, and a battery holder for two 18650's, a small switch I had laying around, and this time I mounted it to a plate of kydex and hot glued some things around in place to hold them there. Also a piece of flexible tubing I believe this is tubing from ICE makers, IE fridge stuff, but I got it at menards, most hardware stores should have it it's approx. 1/4in. diameter and clear.

So basically you've got voltage coming from the battery, negative wire going to one side of the switch, then negative from the fan connected to the other side of the switch. Then solder the positive wires together. So you're making a circuit with the switching on the negative wire completing the circuit. Layout, how ever it works or fits with your gear. I've been considering mounting it to high on the rear of my plate carrier, and running the tubing up to my goggles but I haven't tried that yet. The tubing is in a flat piece of kydex but any flat kydex will do, basically you're making a square that will cover the outlet of the fan, with a single hole that matches the tubing size so you can pass the tubing through and secure it. I again used hot glue to keep the hose in place, and hot glue to attach the plate to the fan. When in doubt I hot glued stuff down, mostly because this is a DIY project and sort of a prototype still.

So I've done two of these so far, first one I mounted to the rear of my helmet. I attached a fair sized panel of soft side velcro to the rear of my helmet. Then I glued hook velcro on the back of the battery box, fan, and switch. This allowed me to position things where I wanted and get it all laid out, not permanent but decently secure. Then I routed the tube through a hole in the rear, through the inside around the foam, and out of the front right above the goggles. I let it stick out around an inch in the middle. I put on my helmet/goggles and just route the tube through the vent hole in the top of the goggles as I'm getting things setup. Works fine and is held there fine during play since the helmet and goggles pretty much stay together.

The second one is the one pictured, I just built it today because I needed something with my ghillie hat for times I'm not wearing my helmet but rather a boonie and ghillie. Mount isn't ideal, originally I used the plate of kydex planning on mounting it on the goggle strap. Changed my mind at the last minute, and punched two small holes in the rear brim of the hat, then installed two chicago screws through the holes to secure it to the hat. Haven't determined routing of the hose yet. But currently planning on running it under the goggle strap along the right side of my head.

So simply this is a rough idea, but most people with a small amount of tools and the ability to sub in other parts and pieces as needed can build this for around $5 or less in parts. So it's cheap and it works well. Is it cool and tactical? Maybe not, but it works damn well. And you could pretty this up quite a bit, so far I was focused on function first and foremost. I haven't field tested the ghillie version yet, will be sunday. But the helmet version I've used quite a bit and never had any fogging at all. Also I used 18650 Lipo cells for batteries, mostly for capacity. Most goggles run AA or AAA cells which sucks, they last a few hours and then run dead, don't move much air etc. This puts out a breeze you can feel and I've never run the batteries dead yet despite running 8+ hours with them on. So I'd guess at least a day maybe more on a set of batteries, you could calculate it with the draw from the fan and the capacity of the cells. But I really didn't care, it lasts a full day of use without any issues which is good enough for me.

Other perks, you can run this with just about any goggle out there that you can get a 1/4in. hose through the top. I've used it on normal goggles, high profile and low profile. All with good results, though I need to test the low profile stuff more since that's my preferred eyepro but I've never had luck with them not fogging. This idea/concept I'm not planning to sell or make so feel free to modify it. Hell it's a simple idea, but I haven't seen too many guys doing it so I figured I'd help out others with the same issues. But feel free to take it where ever you want, feel free to build something like this and sell it whatever doesn't matter to me at all;)

This is the hat version I'm planning on testing. I should mention I attached the fan with a zip tie as well as some hot glue since kydex doesn't take to adhesive well at all typically. Also I mounted it upside down rather than right side up because I was afraid the burlap would get tangled in the fan. So doing it this was works without that issue. That said you could put some sort of netting or screen door material over the fan to avoid that issue as well which is my backup plan is this is an issue.

This was an early version of this one, all the stuff got moved to the rear and mounted as described above. This was just the "see if this works" version. But it works very well with it on the rear.

GAS / Vintage KSC G18 box opening;)

Not really the first time it was opened but I thought some guys might get a kick out of this. I found my original KSC G18c box from 2003 and put stuff back in and the included items. I did realize afterwards they did come with an adjustment tool for the hopup which I never used, and lost. I may have one somewhere since I had several but it's not included. Don't remember anything else they came with maybe a small unjamming rod but can't recall. I also included a shot of the original receipt from 2003 which included things like my CA M15A4 I'm still using though in very modified condition. G&P Mid cap mags for $20 a piece! Some of the old pricing was really crazy compared to modern stuff these days. And for newer guys consider that a CA of this era was honestly not a great gun, the internals almost always needed some level of work. They were about like a CYMA would be today, but their claim to fame at the time was the metal body which wasn't common when TM ruled the earth.

Either way I thought you might get a kick out of it;)

EDIT: Also I forgot to mention the trigger safety is not in place in the video, I do indeed have it sitting here, just haven't reinstalled it. I got it back the last time in complete pieces, and just recently put it back together again and got it working.

The Gallery / Old school pics

So I was digging around in my stuff and came across some old images I thought I'd share. I don't recall the details, as far as why I had pics of this particular time or what I was doing etc. I know it was sometime in the 2001ish time frame, and I know it was a TM M16A2 and a KWA G19 for guns shown. Gear is crap was then and still is today since at the time I couldn't afford anything better. And I was a heck of allot younger looking;) Though this was a good 16ish years ago so that's expected.

Either way thought you guys might get a kick out of them:

EDIT: I should mention I know the pics with me not wearing eyepro were staged either before a game or something since I never play without eyepro. But I don't really remember why I took these or had someone take them, probably just for fun back then;) And my trigger discipline is less than stellar but at the time that wasn't nearly as big of a deal as it is these days in photos'

GAS / M203/40mm grenades

So guys I'm looking for some input from you guys with more grenade experience than I have which is minimal;)

I recently picked up a single shot breech loading grenade launcher in trade along with one of the smaller I believe 96 round shower style grenades. With green gas I'm pretty unimpressed by the range and overall output of the grenade. So I'm looking to outfit a couple M203's this year etc, since we've been using vehicles in our games and it would be nice to have an option to take them out.

So what I'm looking for is some input on grenade type/size that will give me the most bang for the buck. I'm planning on picking up 3-4 of them likely will be shooting foam practice golf balls since I picked some up recently and they fit well down the muzzle and they were very inexpensive.

So I'm wondering is green gas sufficient for shooting actual projectiles? Or should I look into the CO2 fill options? Or just larger green gas based grenades? I haven't been able to find allot of info covering the differences between the various shells or not enough confirmation to figure out what direction to go.

So input would be appreciated.

Accessories & Ammo / Ajax Customs BB swelling

Well guys I knew Ajax customs BB's are prone to swelling but I never encountered it until yesterday and today. Little backstory, been using them for at least a year. However I normally use them fairly quickly. Well I opened a bag before Irene(end of October), and I haven't played a game since then. So this week I started checking over guns for a game in two weeks, found I jammed my long range M16(which is a 6.03mm tightbore). So I cleared it, tried again jam. Well that's weird maybe it's dirty, put it away and pulled out my VSR10(Stock TM barrel 6.08mm by my reading). Ran a couple mags but I was getting overhop and fliers, which is strange since this rifle is a bit of a tack driver especially at 75 yards which is what I was shooting.

So after that I got thinking I should check the diameter of my BB's because I suspected they were swollen. With my caliper which is a harbor freight piece of something but it does work. Well a normal Matrix .25g measures around 5.95mm which is the spec on the bag so good to go. I checked the Ajax .43g and some are 6.01 and 6.02 and a few here and there under that in the 5.98-5.99mm range. Though it's about 1 in 10 that are under 6mm, the rest are over. And despite not terribly accurate measuring tools, I also measured weight on a gram scale. I got on swelled BB's a weight of .41g or so, and on under 6mm BB's I get a weight of around .4g. I should note I don't trust my scale at hundredths of a gram, it's not that good of a scale. But it was consistent, so who knows.

Anyways so I've got 3+ bags of these, the others are sealed so theoretically they are fine, but I'm not opening them up since I'm unlikely to use them before summer. But it got me thinking here I am with possibly $75+ worth of heavy BB's that I like that are too big to use. And I hatched a plan and that's what this thread is here to document success or failure;)

So I make holsters and work leather. In doing so I've got a dry box I built which is basically a dehydrator and runs 120 degrees or so along with very low humidity. It runs 24/7 and it is pretty consistent in temp and humidity despite having wet leather put in there every day. So I took around 50 of the BB's and checked the sizes on all of them, about 1 in 10 was under 6mm most were oversized and over weight. So I'm going to leave them in there for a week or so and see what if any changes occur. Ideally I'll see them dehydrate basically down to proper spec where they can be used. And if that does occur it might be an option for other BB's and brands rather than throwing them out if they do swell up.

So I'll post as I have results to post.
