Accessories & Ammo / Re: Long gun storage
« on: June 25, 2015, 04:38:22 PM »
I've always been a stored in sight kind of guy with both types of guns;) That's how I grew up and it worked fine;)

That's a good idea, I'll take a good close think on that and see what I'm going to do. I've still got them strewn around the shop at the moment but I'm sure one of these days I'll get around to organizing things better. Then I need to build an airsoft work area so I can stop cluttering up my work benches with airsoft projects;)

Well guys I'm hunting for some small parts to finish building out a gun out of my piles of parts. I realized as I started putting things together that I'm going to need a few things that someone out there likely has lying in a box somewhere and wants to get a couple bucks for;)

Looking for:

*M4/M16 Mag catch/release along with spring, button and screw
*M4/M16 grip plate, or grip and plate. But I've got several grips and no motor height adjustment plates around

Now on another project I've had sitting, I need some AK bits as well.
*AK Selector switch along with hardware
*AK Lower receiver for full stock, and possibly the stock. Can be plastic on both, must be TM compatible.

I think that's it, price wise will depend on the part etc, but most of this stuff is cheap little bits bar a few. But generally I figured I'd could raid someone's excess junk and give them a few bucks for the privilege;)

Take care!

AEG / Re: Rhop my experiences thus far
« on: June 21, 2015, 09:53:45 PM »
Well I've read that as well, the theory that basically there is a cushion of air that the BB is traveling along the top of the barrel after stabilizing. I'm not certain I agree with it yet, but I don't have any facts to back up that either. What I've found is stock barrels do pretty dang good, especially TM and well CA barrels. That's most of what I have, this barrel is supposed to probably be from a newish production KWA so maybe that's why it's decent not sure. I don't know who made the tight bore, but I'd love to know so I know to avoid them in the future;) I did polish this brass barrel lightly with some compound back when I was using it on my M4, while I was doing the rhop. I'm still not sure why it's doing so much better with the M14 than the M4. I was running basically the same upgrades, but the M14 is shooting higher velocity, and consistency. The M4 has a full cylinder, from what I recall the M14 has a slightly higher cylinder volume so maybe it's that unsure at this point.

I will say I did try the .28's Elite Force BB's I had a small amount left and I was super impressed. Longest string of 100% hits was 15 in a row at 75 yards on a normal folding chair. That impressed me for an AEG shooting 420fps. I'm sure there are guys out there with more impressive results but first hand I think that's the most consistent shooting I've seen with an AEG certainly one I've owned. My bolt action is still better but it's close, and I can shoot allot faster with the M14. Just means I need to work on the VSR10 some more;)

But no worries I'm happy to document what I've seen. So far I'd still throw my vote that initially it's a pain to get the first time done right, but after it's not nearly as bad. I'd recommend buying the tubing from McMaster Carr though as the mistakes you make to start with will be much cheaper to learn on. And you can get pretty much a lifetime supply for less than $20 shipped.

AEG / Re: Rhop my experiences thus far
« on: June 21, 2015, 04:29:07 PM »
Alrighty guys another rhop/ gun update relating to accuracy and range. This morning being fathers day my wife let me sneak out to the shop when I didn't need to build holsters;) So I took some time to finally throw that m16 length stock brass barrel into my M14. The barrel is a few inches say around 3 shorter than the barrel that was installed and I was incorrect stating that it was a 6.02, it was actually a 6.03 steel of unknown brand. Well looking down the barrel I noticed something I had seen before but put two and two together this morning. I noticed a banding effect visually in the barrel it's not super noticeable and previously I just ignored it since I thought it was just a visual thing it looked weird. Well I was reading an article and I saw this picture:

That is what I envision is the inner barrel surface even though it's more spread out than that. Well point is that I replaced that barrel with the M16 length barrel that was already rhopped and wow what a difference. I went from probably around a 6ft. group at 75 yards to being able to hit a folding chair around 5-8 times out of 10. I'm impressed by the range particularly with .25g BB's since it's nearly as accurate as my sniper rifle with .43g. That said it's much more effected by wind of course due to the light weight but super impressive compared to my other rifles right now.

So the barrel I had is bad, or at the least poorly made and not worth using in any of my guns. I don't know the brand but it's garbage and the stock brass barrel of known origin is much superior for longer range shooting. I noticed the BB's are not going much past the target, they are nearly out of energy at that point but it's shooting on the chrono around 420fps with .2g BB's. I need to one of these days cut the spring down to make it MIA legal though I don't expect to be bringing it to any games other than the ones I organize myself and I'm plenty happy just leaving it on semi auto for the day. Honestly I typically run semi anyways so it's not a huge loss. Though I suspect with 20fps less I won't loose a significant range advantage so I will likely get it down to 400 so that I've got the option for full auto as well.

I haven't shot this combination with a normal bucking to say hey this is the rhop making the difference but my other bucking based guns as still dropping short of this mark with the same basic FPS levels, so I'm willing to say the rhop is probably responsible for the slight gains in range. With an ordinary bucking I seem to hit the limit around 65-70 yards without overhopping to crazy levels. I will say the M14 is overhopping just a little bit, likely my rhop installation since I've barely got the hopup engaged to keep it where it is, just touching the nub. So if I felt like tearing it down again(I don't;) I could take a little more material off the rhop and fix that. Likely I'll just buy some more .28's and see how they do or test some heavier ammo since this is going to be a semi auto gun most likely 99% of the time anyhow. So I'd like to see how it does in the kinda sniper role with the option to switch over if I get found.

But it's overall a great change for the gun that has been honestly a real pain in the butt to get working properly. I don't think I've ever torn apart a gun this many times just to have it give me problems over and over again. But now that it's shooting well it gives me an excuse to carry that heavy of a gun into the field;)

I'll update again when I get around to rhopping a few of the other guns around here, might be a little while. I think I'll play with some of the shorter barreled and lower fps options and see if there are any interesting finds.

Take care!

I'm a little more old school;) I've been lately digging the classics of the 80's and 90's(sadly classics now, not sure when I got old).

AC/DC Thunderstruck;)

Granted typically not airsoft pre game music I end up too busy prepping to do much before hand but try to get things around, but it does help me in the shop when I need some energy and just not feeling it. Which happens to be today, so AC/DC is currently running very loud in the shop and will be for the next 8 or 9 hours;)

No worries it changed a few times while I tried to get things to work the way I wanted them to. I posted a thread about the change a while back and edited a few threads where the video's broke when I made the change. Figured we didn't have that much youtube content yet so editing only took a few minutes.

Either way should be working properly now and a heck of allot easier to post videos along with being able to view them mobile which was very important since that's how I view the forum most of the time along with allot of other guys.

What tab?

To post youtube video's just post the URL and it will embed automatically now, and it works on Tapatalk as well so nothing needs to be done special now.

Airsoft Discussion / Re: Thermal Lens question
« on: June 16, 2015, 11:32:45 AM »
Well being a glasses wearing goggle guy, granted I run contacts the vast majority of the time. Reason is my current glasses are just an odd shape that doesn't fit well under any of my current sets of goggles which I've got bunches of.

So first things first glasses, you've got another lens in the system to fog and it typically will even with thermal lens your glasses are a single lens. You can antifog treat them with wipes etc and it will help but usually I don't have a ton of long term luck with antifog products. 30 minutes to an hour later I usually find myself reapplying the treatment, which is fine for short games but isn't going to work well if your running longer games.

For thermal lens usually they work pretty well, but being someone who can seem to fog up just about anything that exists they still don't work 100%. If you get just the right conditions they can and will fog, but it's less likely. Also more headgear like he mentioned will make the problem worse. His test while not bad I don't think really shows the problem, sitting still after running is the problem for me. So had he run around then laid prone for 5 minutes in the heat I'd like to see the results. I don't think they are doing anything different with these then the other thermal lens goggles on the market, other than maybe their own antifog treatment which they sell separately. IE I think if you used their treatment on any normal good thermal lens you'll likely get the same basic results other than maybe airflow being different goggle to goggle.

Recommendations anything decent with a thermal lens that you can fit your glasses under;) And treat the glasses or better get contacts. I'm running Bolle x500's that I got a good deal on most of the time and I'm fairly happy with them. I'm also testing some of the smaller tiny eyepro that is out there now but I'm running into the same issues I had years ago with my Wiley X goggles etc when they first came out. They fog like nobody's business for me, with antifog treatment I can get a short game but often times they fog allot for me. Still trying other things with them since I love the size of them, they work better with my hat etc, but they fog allot. If I'm up and moving around not too bad, but if I'm sitting with my sniper rifle waiting for a shot in concealment they are borderline useless.

Accessories & Ammo / Long gun storage
« on: June 08, 2015, 04:27:13 PM »
So guys I'm looking for ideas, since I've been back into airsoft my guns have pretty much been laying around my shop without any real organization. I've been looking around online at some ideas for storage, but I'm curious if you guys have come up with something I haven't seen. I've got plenty of room I'm just trying to figure out what I'm going to build or make to store them and it wouldn't hurt to be able to display them to a degree as well.

More less just wondering what you guys have done particularly if you've got a fairly large collection, mine isn't huge but I've got 10+ long guns as well as 6+ handguns and wouldn't mind a better means of getting them out of my way but still having them easy to get at for plinking and getting ready for games.

Take care!

Clothing & Load Bearing Gear / Re: Plate carriers and chest rigs
« on: June 08, 2015, 12:11:04 PM »
My friend has that rig and the only downside that he has commented on if the fact that included with the package there are only mag pouches. Obviously you'll get other pouches but to start with you'll only have mag pouches.

That's what I was figuring mostly that I'd have some extra pouches for other gear etc down the road. Pick up some other pouches as I figured out what I needed etc then keep them around.

I prefer plate carriers over chest rigs because of the "hugger" feel that they give. The plates inside hold them rigid so they don't sag, and if properly fit they shouldn't sway on your body at all.
Chest rigs also tend to put all the mags/equipment lower over your gut rather than on your chest. Depending on your form, one of those styles may be better than the other, but I find that having the mags/equipment higher up allows me to lay prone easier, as there isn't a cluster of gear over my belly.
Of course plate carriers also provide more space to mount pouches and such, but that typically comes at the cost of being heavier. In the end, it mostly depends on how you set it up.
Plate carriers will also cost more, as you won't find a truly good plate carrier for $40.

Now about color:
I used to use all-OD gear (pretty much) and now I'm switching to all Coyote Brown. In fact, I just today placed an order for the CB replacement of my OD belt setup. Why? Because OD Green does not go well with any tan-based camouflage color. I want to be able to wear Woodland MARPAT and Desert MARPAT clothing without switching up my gear, and have it still work together. Those two patterns both have CB in them, so CB just works great with both. In fact, Coyote Brown goes well with pretty much everything...

Interesting I hadn't really given that much thought height/weight I'm 6'2, 210lbs or so with a very little bit of gut not terribly muscular in the modern sense but fairly solid upper body just because of my work. I haven't worn or had the chance to wear much for other gear than my blackhawk vest but it puts the mags low but since I typically only run single mags they tend to be thin and not dig in too much while going prone. It's also got some higher pouches though honestly they just aren't a size that I find a whole lot of use for. Typically I might put a dead rag in one, and a spare sniper rifle mag in the other or a pistol mag but neither is that useful they are small and oriented sideways. That all said are you saying that a plate carrier is better for a skinny guy or vice versus? Just couldn't tell but I'm very curious since I hadn't given much thought to weight/build effecting it but it's a good thing to consider.

I'm not super opposed to spending money on this setup, it's just that my budget is very small right now so the more money I spend the longer I've gotta run my black vest until I put together the cash for something better. So it's a time problem more than anything else and honestly I'm ready to get on to something other than black. After all these years working around it, I'm just ready for something that blends better out in the woods where I almost entirely play. If my current rig was OD I'd probably still keep on running it just because I'm fairly happy with it, but if I'm going to replace it I'd like to be able to change things up down the road as I find some setup that works better. And I'm also looking at the fact that once I own the pouches I can pickup anything else MOLLE and just move the pouches over to build out a whole new setup which makes much more sense to me than starting fresh so to speak.

On color that's been something I've considered. I like OD since I think it blends more in woodland than brown or tan, but you make a good point about looking good with the camo and I agree the brown tends to look better with tan camo. I don't right at the moment have any tan though and I'm not really planning on picking up any soon. Right now with the games I'm playing up here they have been small enough to not have real camo requirements. I doubt I'll have time to attend any larger games down state any time soon since I've just been too busy and tight on cash to make the trip. Not to mention real life getting in the way;) So I'm not too concerned with it, but on the other hand it makes sense with my goal of this whole thing to make it as functional as possible across the widest variety of camo etc. So I'll have to do some more thinking on that, I believe the only OD thing I've got right at the moment is my mesh mask that I recently picked up, which I could easily spray or buy another one since they aren't expensive at all.

Either way thanks much for the input guys any more ideas or suggestions on rigs would be appreciated. I should also say my primary usage. Games lately have been short, IE not long enough to require a reload if I'm running a highcap most of the time. I'm pushing things more towards the milsim side of things with locap/midcap loadouts rather than hicaps etc. but until other guys are setup that way it's not likely to go that direction real soon. I'd like to be able to load out enough mags for a full day if needed. I'd like to be able to handle some pistol mags since I always carry some sort of backup gun typically an AEP but I do run GBB's when the weather is warm enough for them to function properly. When I play up north it's more CQB but outdoors, it's around a sawmill so there are lots of closer engagements around lumber piles and buildings but I still tend to run 400 or less rounds per round before the opportunity to reload mags comes around. And I know I could get by just fine without a rig for my piddly needs but I really after using a vest for so many years prefer to have the ammo on hand and not need it than run out. But I think that having the ability to somewhat tailor my loadout to the game would come in handy. I figure I could loadout a bunch of pouches for longer games if they pop up, and maybe a lighter version for the majority of my playing. The other thing is I switch guns, allot. Seldom do I run an entire day with a single gun, it might come to that eventually. But since I've been back in airsoft I've been having fun playing with guns I haven't used in a while. So typically I'll run a M4 platform most of the day, but I'll swap to the sniper rifle part of the time, or the G36 or one of the other bunches of guns I've got just to play with something different. So mag pouches have to be somewhat able to handle other mags. My pouches on my blackhawk are designed for double m4 mags, and I've never had an issue tucking an AK mag, or G36 mag into them so I'm looking for something in the same vein, priority on m4 mags, but the ability to run some other things would be nice.

Luke

EDIT:

^so much yes.

1. Hydration packs- where do you put them on a chest rig? Sure, you could get a separate backpack like a Yote, but that's an extra cost. On a PC, it's really easy to get a super cheap MOLLE hydration pack that will attach directly to your back (you can also put a bladder right in the plate bag).

2. In my opinion, plate carriers are infinitely more modular/customizable than a chest rig (even one with MOLLE). There's just a lot more room. The downside is you have to buy pouches separately (unless they're bundled with the PC) but the upside is you have something that you can tailor to your specific needs.

3. Stinger said that plate carriers are typically heavier than chest rigs, which is true, but it doesn't have to be the case. There's a lot of low profile, minimalist PCs out there that are quite light.

4. I just came up with this idea while writing this: have you considered an RRV? They're kind of like a chest rig/plate carrier hybrid. I've never owned one though.

Keep in mind that I'm not a super experienced gear guy or anything (where's Knief?) and those are just my opinions based off of my experience.

That's something else I hadn't considered or forgot about. I would like some sort of hydration, I got heat exhaustion several years ago and honestly I don't do well in the heat and sun like I used to. I've found if I push water allot, I handle it much better. But even in these short games I'm finding myself not thinking about it and needing to push water more and more. That's also the reason I thought about a chest rig, is lightweight and a little cooler I figured, which might help a bit with my trouble in the heat but since I haven't worn one I'm just not sure if it's going to help.

I haven't looked at the RRV I'll take a look at it. I feel like an idiot even asking these questions to be honest because I've been involved in airsoft for a long time now but gear isn't something I've kept up with nor was really even that good with. For whatever reason I always bought guns, lots of guns;) But I typically just worked with what I had on gear other than camo. Now of course this interest in gear could just be because my day to day work is building holsters, so I deal with gear in that facet of life all the time. I've even considered building some gear since my sewing machine is more than capable of stitching any sort of nylon I can put through it, or even building some kydex stuff. I don't do kydex in my shop, but I've dabbled with it in the past and I've got all the flaring tools and whatnot to make production level gear. That all said I'm backed up with leather work like usual, so it's not that I have the time to build things, I do like to build stuff though;) But again I don't honestly know what the heck I would build:) I just don't have the experience to figure that stuff out yet. I can build carry holsters and whatnot because I've used them for years, have tons of experience in that section of the market and know what makes a good rig. Until I get that sort of experience in nylon gear I'm just a newbie trying to figure out what works, and hopefully trying to avoid expensive mistakes on gear I don't care for;)

Forum News / New feature added to the site - Youtube video embedding
« on: June 05, 2015, 08:28:44 PM »
Hey guys I had updated the youtube plugin to function the other day, but I didn't like the way it was working(and I apparently wasn't alone;) So I asked around and installed a different plugin. Now all you have to do is post the link to the video and it will embed in the message automatically and it works with Tapatalk as well.

Any trouble or questions just give me a shout.

Link?
Click on the image in his post. It's actually an embedded video.
I hate the way video linking works on this forum.

@Stinger Actually just patched that up with a different plugin, I didn't like the way that one was working. Still doesn't show in Tapatalk but I'm not sure if I can fix that or not.

Either way if you run into problems with it just shoot me a note, I'll take a look at it;)

EDIT: Nevermind found out from a buddy that runs a forum on here what he was using and it's working much better no tagging needed just post the URL without tags and it will embed, as well it shows up on Tapatalk now too.

Should be fixed now I believe or at least it seems to be for me, didn't realize the theme uses a different icon apparently when there are sub forums so when I added the sub forums it looks like it started pulling the old icon I hadn't replaced. So should be back in action now.

Call me a1,

I've been on the boards for about 6-7 years.  Usually make a show to  Rec games in Taylor, did a long number of games at Farmington while it was operating.  Helped out with the initial conception of the Matrix Airsoft as well with Hockeydemon.  Looking to get back into it since I have more time and money on my hands.  A quick google search of "Legitimate airsoft events in south east michigan," pretty much got me involved after discovering SEMIA.  Don't play in your backyards kids. ;)

Also, if anyone knows who to message about transferring post count, that would be greatly appreciated!  ;D

Done;)
