Forum News / Tapatalk update etc
« on: April 13, 2021, 12:40:58 PM »
So I got a minute to work on the site and update Tapatalk it should be working(if it wasn't before). It's been something I've been meaning to do for sometime but I required doing a full backup of the site and database before pushing through the update and anytime I had time to do it my internet sucked. Those not familiar I live way back in the woods with crap internet(until Elon gets his butt in gear and offers me a slot on Starlink).

So testing right now but feel free to use it, it should be 100% back in action again.

So apparently google's recapcha was broken, which means IT WAS THE RUSSIANS.

Actually in this case it was legit Russians who posted all sorts of porn and weird crap. So I hope you guys bought your black market viagara while the links were up;)

I just cleaned all the garbage out, upped the security for new accounts and also setup manual approval of all new accounts. It's a PITA since I'll have to approve all new accounts but it should keep this sort of thing from happening until google updates their end of things and we can get back to normal.

If you see something weird report it, I know a few guys reported this I just hadn't had time to check what was going on until tonight. So things should be back to normal, enjoy!

Luke

EDIT: Also if you registered a new account yesterday or today it's likely gone. I just deleted about another 100 accounts that were registered since this issue. Most if not all used Russian IP's so I bulk killed them, that way I don't have to worry about them going active and spamming. I also did a search and if any legit guys registered with a *.ru email sorry your account is also gone. Register with gmail or something legit too much spam these days from server farms over yonder. My rule going forward is no *.ru email domains etc so be aware.

Accessories & Ammo / Barrett M82A1 mods
« on: March 15, 2019, 06:28:57 PM »
So I've got a Barrett it's a Snow Wolf AEG I picked up as a shell and rebuilt the internals. Basically it was empty of all mechanical parts and slightly cut down outer barrel etc. But I built a gearbox, installed everything and got it shooting right in the 540fps range with a .2g. Fairly long barrel so it doesn't Joule creep even with heavier ammo. I never have had time to really tune it like my other long range guns since I built it around two years ago which happens to be the last time I've really had much time for airsoft with family and business getting in the way(along with health, had a bad bout of pneumonia last year).

Either way I've been 3d modeling this last year, and 3d printing so naturally I've been thinking about airsoft related projects. I've done some that aren't ready to be shown, and I do intend to likely sell some parts eventually. But until then I've got some pictures of some cool bits I've been making for my Barrett. I never liked the fact the Snow Wolf wasn't super accurate to the real deal so some is to improve that. The other is the M107 QDL Suppressor and muzzle break. Which no one builds an airsoft version of, so I figured that would be a fun project to do. I previously had a hand built version but it was further from realistic spec etc. This isn't perfect to spec but it's very close, based on the specs that I could get and scaling within CAD.

Either way fun project and as time permits and the weather gets better I'll take some more pictures of the fully finished gun.

Take care!

Luke

EDIT: Also should mention I'm planning to add the allen head machine screws to the muzzle break section of the suppressor. I had printed them but it wasn't the look I wanted. So I'll just drill and screw some in next time I get to town and can grab some to spec where I need. There are also a few other minor imperfections across the board, those will be cleaned up in time. I actually built this over the last 3 days, so it's barely finished. And the stock clamshell piece I just finished today and installed. And I ran out of paint;)

So there will be several things "fixed" before it's actually done. And I plan to go through and change out the gearbox with a QD box and finish the actual tuning before it hits the field. So it's somewhat of a work in progress like allot of stuff but I still think despite it's complete lack of practicality it's awful cool;) I doubt it'll see much use at all, generally I'll grab my TM VSR10 or my CA M16A2 but maybe once in a while I'll bring out the M82A1;)

Forum News / MIA Facebook group
« on: February 02, 2019, 07:41:47 PM »
Currently Facebook has decided to block or ban the MIA facebook group, we're trying to appeal and get it sorted out, but at least at this time we've got zero info on what's going to happen.

So just a heads up, nothing has changed with MIA as a whole and to the best of our knowledge we didn't do anything against the TOS or see anything against the TOS.

So we're gonna have to wait and see what happens but if you've got any questions we don't really have any answers;) In the meantime feel free to use the forums as there won't be any changes here.

If Facebook decides to bring the group back I'll post another update here also, and if we start another group etc I'll also post it here.

Take care!

So I've gotten a few comments over the years about guys scamming or people not holding up their end of the deal. Now I'm not saying all sellers or buyers are bad certainly not the case. But anyone involved in any hobby buying and selling has at some point likely encountered someone who didn't hold up their end of the bargain.

First and foremost it's not MIA selling, it's individuals. We can't control effectively who uses this area, so if someone posts something for sale someone on staff may know that person but more often than not we don't. And since the platform as a whole is far less active than it was in the past there is little way to know the guys selling. As a buyer or seller it's your responsibility to protect yourself and do your best to check into guys. But at the end of the day there is always an element of risk to buying and selling and by using this you assume that risk.

Second, use paypal when possible DO NOT USE FRIENDS AND FAMILY, honestly I know guys don't want to pay the fees etc. But if you use Friends and Family you get ZERO paypal protection. Is it fine most of the time yeah, until it isn't. I've had guys I trusted fail to deliver using friends and family I have zero need to ever use it again when buying something and I'd highly recommend you not using it either.

Third, if possible meet up in person to be able to look over the gun. In almost all cases I've bought a used airsoft gun something has been wrong that wasn't disclosed. Sometimes the guy knew, sometimes he didn't have the experience to know, and who knows what accounts for the other times. But being able to check out the gun/gear in person solves that problem. Also if possible go somewhere you can see it shoot and hear the mechbox if applicable etc. If you can't then take a note from the guys online who show a video of the gun functioning, then you can hear, and see some more things than pictures will show you.

Last but not least if a deal sounds too good to be true then please exercise additional caution. I know everyone wants a deal but just like you're unlikely to "get a million dollars by filling out a facebook quiz" it's highly unlikely you'll see an $800 gun for $100 in perfect working order. I'm not saying it doens't happen, but it's infrequent so if you see a good deal put up your shields a little harder to insure you're protected. And keep in mind while we all enjoy the hobby at the end of the day look out for yourself as no one else will, it's your responsibility to try and insure things go well.

If you've got any questions feel free to shoot me a note.

AEG / Very cool AEG design made in the USA
« on: November 02, 2017, 03:19:00 PM »
So I came across this and it's a few weeks old but I haven't seen anyone talking about it;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LJYtYn7x0A&feature=youtu.be

So basically it's an AEG but it also has a precocking system with a sear. From what I understand looking at it and watching the video. At first I actually thought it was an open bolt design firing going forward from the sear. But further looking the cylinder(fake bolt), basically draws the piston to the rear cocking it onto a sear, then returns forward either by spring or cycle, I'd assume spring since it supposedly uses normal gears. So basically the cylinder is the loading mechanism cocking the piston and moving like a piston would in a typical AEG. But then when the trigger is pulled the piston flies forward shooting the BB, and I'm guessing a sensor or switch of some sort initiates the action cycling it to the rear repeating the process.

Overall this is actually not far off an idea I had, however I had no way to build it;) So I'm pretty interested to see how this goes. The downside is of course the price I heard around $1300 which is way out of my airsoft budget. But the concept is cool, and if the build quality is there I can see this being a 600-700 dollar gun that would be popular. Or possibly a conversion kit since I don't see a massive issue with the form factor etc of their box. They'd need a proprietary hopup chamber and a few other bits but it seems possible.

Either way this is a super interesting bit to me, it's got some of the realism of GBB but with the reliability hopefully of an AEG. Additionally cool is bolt lock back, along with the ability to use standard AEG mags. Both are things I would love to see happen across the board but this looks like the best implementation I've seen along with probably a great training platform for CQB with LEO environments etc. So we'll see where this goes but I'm excited, it's a cool idea and I hope it takes off and is reliable.

Forum News / Current situation with MIA FB as well as forums.
« on: October 06, 2017, 04:32:10 PM »
The state of the MIA Community. We've been talking in a thread about where to go and what to do to improve the community as a whole. As I'm sure many of you noticed there has been some pretty major changes on the Facebook group in the last 24 hours. I just wanted to say that at the end of the day no one wanted this to occur. It's going to further fracture an already delicate community and at the end of the day hurt the players and hosts within Michigan.

The goal of MIA has always been to keep things going forward and try to keep a civil community and give them a place to talk about all the facets of airsoft. With Facebook that's become a bit more difficult for the reasons mentioned in that thread I talked about above. But that doesn't change the fact that we've got the best interest of the community in mind. The admin and mod staff is made up of guys from all over the map of activity. We've got a couple guys that because life gets in the way don't play very often at all. We've got active hosts and players as well. Myself I was inactive for a long time though I've been very active in the UP the last several years. And I've also been very active here keeping the site running and adding new features etc. The way MIA is setup isn't centralized, it's basically a gentleman’s agreement among the staff on how to do things and how to go forward. It may say admin by my name but that's because I'm working in the background etc on the site. I'm not above or below the other guys on staff. If you've earned everyone's respect your opinion is basically the same as everyone else’s.

I should also mention that people within the normal MIA players are always welcome to start taking some responsibility and modding parts of the forum etc and eventually move up into the higher positions. And I don't mean higher in the sense of "your cooler than them" but rather more responsibility and more trust because that is the primary thing with the MIA staff as a whole. Allot of us have been around the block, we've seen allot of things come and go. But the one thing that keeps up spending time here without making a dime from the effort, is that at the end of the day we love the game. That's why we're here, we like to go sling BB's at one another.

One final little bit I wanted to just thank the guys over the years who have supported MIA and the hosts within Michigan. By posting information here, attending games in Michigan and everything in between. By being a part of the community you're bringing value to the community and it's appreciated even if it's not always acknowledged.

Airsoft Locations / Airsoft Locations guidelines
« on: October 04, 2017, 10:53:01 AM »
So this area of the forum is setup so that field owners can post up more information about their fields for players. And also a place to review of sorts various fields. The one thing I want to make clear is that I'd like to see those separate. So as an example if "Jim bob's airsoft field" posts a thread with pictures and information, pricing etc on their field. I don't want to see tons of guys jumping in reviewing it. The thread about the field should be kept just for them to update information on developments and new features of the field and changes. Aside from that I expect we'll have running threads on certain fields reviewing them, posting ideas and issues. But feel free to start a new thread there as well to give your two cents.

Also to note, if a field is no longer active just notify a mod/admin and we'll remove it from the sticky threads at the top of this section. I'd like to keep this as active as possible list wise, so that new players when looking around can get a good feel for the location and all the information all in one place.

Airsoft Discussion / Forums lets talk about them as a whole
« on: September 26, 2017, 01:58:24 PM »
So guys we all know that currently forums are not in vogue I think there are allot of reasons they should be myself. But this is a weird topic but I think it has merit. What I want to know is why you came to MIA, what drew you here functionally or feature wise. I'll post below to give my own example, but I think knowing what drove you here initially may yield some interesting things that may tell us something about going forward as a community.

So I came to MIA because I was at the time wanting to get into paintball. I couldn't find a gun or guns that I really liked. I had played paintball in the past non-seriously and was looking to take it up a notch. But as I researched I just didn't like the guns. Then I got into the cost, at the time I was a young guy without much extra income, the cost of CO2 and paint was just a bit investment for the amount I wanted to play which was all the time. So somehow in my searching(I say searching because crazily enough I don't think I was using google yet), I came across airsoft, and started just digging into it deeply to learn about it. The guns drew me in, I've been a gun guy my whole life and I loved the idea of realistic guns and particularly guns I couldn't easily own like full auto's and weird guns like the P90 etc. I'd owned and shot allot of typical centerfire rifles like AR's, and AK's but they were semi of course. So the idea of these cool guns was a draw, and the cost wasn't that much when compared to the real deal. I mean I TM P90 used would be a couple hundred dollars, a PS90 which didn't exist to my knowledge at the time was around a thousand if not more.

So in searching I learned a bunch, joined forums because that's where I found myself searching for information. I may have even joined Airsoft Players or one of the other larger forums at the time before MIA. Then stumbled into MIA and found a community. The players and the scene as a whole was quite a bit smaller than anytime since then, from memory MIA had a couple hundred players when I started on the forums. But they were a tight community of guys traveling around the state on the weekends to play games on someone's property. There was one Michigan retailed, Wolverine Tactical long gone now. But at the time the guy who ran it was named Mike, and I actually bought some stuff from him at my first game downstate. But overall it was a good group of guys who loved playing airsoft. Sure there was drama but generally not from the admin/mod side of things, they seemed to just like playing and trying to further the sport as a whole.

And when you asked a question, pending it wasn't a stupid question or in the wrong area etc. You got an answer, and while there might be discussion about minutia you could find someone who knew the answer. Come to find out many years later guys weren't always right but they were right for the time. For instance gearbox timing, at the time somehow that made sense, it was the excuse honestly we used to explain midfeeds in gearboxes likely related to either hopup, nozzle, or other issues we'd not figured out at the time. And you have to realize this was before youtube, I Learned to take apart a gearbox from a series of photos/text from Airsoft Players forum, and then jumped in.

But overall for me it was the game, love for it and the community that came up around it with a good dose of knowledge from guys who'd been taking apart their own guns. Typically at the time fixing guns rather than tuning, tuning tended to be more common later. At the time shooting 400fps on a stock TM without it eating itself was pretty much everyone's goal. RPS wasn't on anyone's radar that I'm aware of, at least not at that point.

So I'm curious for you guys what drew you in, feel free to repeat even if someone else already posted I'm interested to hear.

Take care!

Luke
