Clothing & Load Bearing Gear / Re: Milsim required???
« on: March 17, 2017, 02:18:19 PM »
A little late to this party, but:

most events are structured tan camos versus green camos with each side having a list of common camos to select from. So, for example, if you want to play on the tan side, you can't go wrong owning a set of DCUs, Arid MARPAT or Multicam. Likewise, for the green side, M81 woodland, temperate MARPAT, OD, etc.

It gets more complicated once you start to talk about the bigger national events - these may have much more specific camo requirements.

Joe Abercrombie - First Law Trilogy (The Blade Itself, Before They are Hanged, Last Argument of Kings). Trust me, if you like GRRM (Song of Ice and Fire), you'll like this.

Tom Clancy - Red Storm Rising. WWIII in Europe during the 1980s. Clancy's greatest work, in my opinion.

China Mieville - Perdido Street Station. Steam-punk/fantasty meets a crazy amalgamation of science and magic in a city inspired by Victorian London.

GAS / Re: M203/40mm grenades
« on: February 17, 2017, 04:40:47 PM »
I have 6 of these (http://www.evike.com/products/38167/) that I purchased with a bunch of extra caps. I can fill the shell with whatever level of ammunition I want (less ammo for more range, more ammo for greater spread, etc). The info I've seen is that having the single large hole in the shell versus many holes a-la the "shower" type grenades is beneficial for launching nerf-type projectiles. I haven't actually shot any nerf footballs or foam whatnot using these shells, so I don't have any direct experience with them. I looked into getting some CO2 shells, but the requirement to have some sort of extra device to fill CO2 into and then from that into the shells was offputting.

Airsoft Discussion / Re: Getting ready for MILSIM
« on: January 03, 2017, 10:42:30 AM »
Probably the most important thing in attending a MILSIM event is to come prepared and ready to play. Your gear and equipment should be squared away; you shouldn't have to hunt high and low for pieces of gear. You should be ready to toss your stuff on and hit the field. As mentioned above, your rifle needs to, at the very least, be reliable.

I'd also add that there are two components that are a must for any event that has a night component: a night aiming device like a laser and a flash light. You can easily get away with not having an optic of any kind, but it's important to be able to see where your rifle is pointing at night (laser) and identify targets (light).

I personally bring 2 guns to any major event I attend; a primary and a back-up. I leave my back-up in my car. If I won't have an opportunity to go back to my car I carry a high-capacity sidearm (MK23).

My other recommendation for both guns and gear is to keep things as light and as simple as possible. MILSIM events are often high intensity with few (if any) breaks. Having a lightweight set of gear and a lightweight rifle means tiring out less quickly and being able to remain effective on the field for longer periods of time. Keeping things simple means not carrying everything and the kitchen sink onto the field with you. Bring only necessities.

You might want to get a hold of @sgttom. I think he was part of a WWII group somewhere in Michigan. You may also want to check out the WWII Airsoft Association (http://ww2aa.proboards.com/).

Airsoft Discussion / Best performing M4A1 AEG
« on: October 20, 2016, 03:20:19 PM »
Hi guys,

I know there's been some recent talk about the "top dog" M4 platforms on the market (http://www.miairsoft.org/index.php?topic=1002.0).

The consensus seems to be that the Krytac line offers the best bang for the buck.

But... what if someone wants just a plain-jane M4A1, CQBr, etc AEG? I'm talking about an M4 with standard FSP, KAC rail... your basic "SOPMOD Block I" type configuration.

Is it best to just buy a G&P/VFC and then spend a bit extra to do some upgrades or is there a particular brand that makes a pretty competitive "basic" M4?

I used to always recommend that people buy a gun for its externals and features that they like, and the internals can always be modified, tuned and improved upon.

Yeah, that's great advice. I don't know how much time and money I spent in earlier years modifying the hell out of the exterior of my AEGs.

Krytac hands down. They have the most, best parts in their platforms, even in their Alpha line, they shoot phenomenally.

While G&Ps are very solid performers, the only real things they have change up is their externals. Though one thing G&P has been doing right for some time, is coming standard with Deans connectors.

Gotta be careful with this. I've received several G&Ps wired to standard deans, but also one wired to micro-deans (WTF?). I've also owned ones that were wired to tamiyas, but that was quite a while ago.

Airsoft Discussion / Re: Airsoft ROF - Which do you prefer and why?
« on: September 30, 2016, 10:33:42 AM »
I think imposing a semi-auto only rule is the only way to combat the sort of high ROF abuses that have become common with high-end AEGs and HPA systems. Not only is semi-auto only more realistic, but it also helps to create more dimensionality in the game where teams have to think more about how to employ their SAWs and MGs. I like the trend of having different weapon systems on the field from standard rifles to SAWs/MGs to GLs firing TAG rounds to pea grenades and mortars.

Having come over from paintball waaayy back in 2006, I saw how high ROF was starting to ruin that hobby. The trend for years had been faster and faster guns and while ROF had increased, the cost of entry for those high ROF platforms had come way down due to guns like the Smart Parts Ion and easily accessible "ramping" fire modes. Airsoft has largely been free of this "arms race" because everyone has always had the ability to fire in fully-automatic with a decent ROF. It's only been since the introduction of HPA platforms that we've seen buzz-saw level rates of fire. Sure, DSG guns are out there, but were never super common.

I'm not arguing against HPA platforms. I love all three of mine and don't own any AEGs any more. But I do think semi-auto only is the way to go.
